Save More Than 12 Billion Euros! The Rapid Growth Of Wind Power Generation In The EU 24 / 2023.Feb
Rapid growth in wind and photovoltaic power generation has led to a reduction in EU gas imports from Russia by 9 billion cubic meters.

Ember reported that wind and photovoltaic capacity growth will continue to accelerate, and electricity demand in the EU is likely to continue to decline in the coming months.

The year-long conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been a "blessing in disguise" for the EU in the renewable energy industry. An analysis by energy think-tank Ember shows that the European Union saved more than 12 billion euros by importing natural gas from Russia and switching to electricity from growing wind farms and photovoltaic systems across the bloc.

In a year in which the Russia-Ukraine conflict began on February 24 last year, wind and photovoltaic power generation in the EU increased by 50 TWh. Ember pointed out that the share of electricity generated by these two renewable energy sources accounts for about 23% of the total electricity generation in the European Union.

Ember said in its "European Power Review 2023" report that since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine rush, the EU's new wind power and photovoltaic power generation capacity has reduced the EU's required natural gas imports by 9 billion cubic meters. 12 billion euros were saved.

Ember pointed out in the report that the EU faced a triple crisis last year: the EU cut off its close ties with Russia and drastically reduced its imports of natural gas; hydropower production was reduced due to dry weather; and nuclear power production was reduced due to the closure of nuclear power plants in France and Germany.

The report also pointed out that all the credit for the EU's ability to continue to provide electricity goes to the development of renewable energy sources, rather than coal-fired power generation.

Sarah Brown, senior analyst at Ember, said, "The Russia-Ukraine conflict has shocked EU countries. Suddenly, the vulnerability of energy supplies caused by dependence on fossil fuels has become a grim reality. Over the past year, EU countries have been Committing to addressing these risks and accelerating the transition to a cleaner and safer power system is critical in a year of ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, as the EU rapidly expands photovoltaic and wind capacity to achieve permanent energy independence. "

Regarding the forecast for the development of the European energy industry in 2023, Ember pointed out in the report that the EU's energy supply will improve in 2023, this is because hydropower generation will rebound, and France plans to restart nuclear power facilities. Growth in wind and photovoltaic power generation in the EU will continue to accelerate, and electricity demand will likely continue to decline in the coming months. In addition, demand for fossil fuels (coal and natural gas) will decline further in 2023.

The International Energy Agency proposed a 10-point plan for Europe in March 2022 and is committed to helping the EU develop renewable energy to reduce dependence on Russia's energy supply. The European Union has adopted some of these recommendations in its own programme.
